AI video editor for ads: what it should do
"AI video editor" covers very different tools. Some make new footage from a prompt. Others edit the footage you filmed, doing the slow parts of the job for you. For ads built on real people talking about real products, the second kind is the one that matters. This page explains what it should do, and links our deeper guides.
The short version
- An AI video editor for ads edits your footage: it picks takes, cuts filler, writes captions and builds versions.
- Making video from a prompt is a different job. Mashcut never does it: every frame and word in an ad is yours.
- For UGC ads, the most useful thing it can do is make several hook versions from one shoot.
- Mashcut makes up to 5 ads from one shoot, on iPhone or in your browser.
What is an AI video editor for ads?
It's an editor that uses AI to do the parts of editing that follow rules: transcribing what was said, choosing the best take of a line, finding the pauses, timing the captions. You still choose the footage and approve the result; the editor saves the hours in between.
Is an AI video editor the same as AI-made video?
No. AI-made video creates footage, voices or people that were never filmed. An AI video editor works on what you filmed. For UGC ads the difference matters: the ad's value is a real person using a real product, in their own words.
Mashcut is an editor only. It adds no music, voices or stock footage, and every caption comes from your words. In Auto Edit, an ad's hook can be a short line written from something you said, and you can change it before you export.
What should an AI video editor for ads do?
| Job | Why it matters | Read more |
|---|---|---|
| Cut ums, pauses and retakes | Dead air wastes the opening seconds | Remove ums and pauses |
| Caption every ad | A muted viewer still gets the hook | Caption UGC ads |
| Make hook versions | The opener is the part most worth testing | Test hooks from one shoot |
| Export ready-to-post files | 9:16, sized for TikTok, Reels and Shorts | UGC ad editor for iPhone |
| Work where your footage is | Phone footage and computer footage both need cutting | Edit UGC ads online |
Hook versions deserve the most weight. TikTok's split testing guide (opens in a new tab) lists video hooks, the opening 2–3 seconds, as a creative variable you can test, and an editor that makes each version for you is what makes testing cheap.
How does Mashcut work as an AI video editor for ads?
- Give it your footage. Up to 5 hooks and up to 10 demo clips, or one long take in Auto Edit.
- It cuts. It keeps one take of each repeated line, cuts the ums and pauses between words and captions your words.
- You get a set. One ad per hook, each a 9:16 MP4 at 1080×1920, up to 35 seconds long.
- You correct and export. Change any caption, use another take, or trim, split or remove a clip.
New subscribers start with a 3-day free trial; making an ad uses 1 credit, and exporting is free.
How does Mashcut compare with other video editors?
- Mashcut vs CapCut for UGC ads: a full editor with templates, compared with a tool built for hook-test sets.
- A Splice alternative for UGC ads: a hands-on mobile editor, compared with cuts made for you.
