Terms of Service
These terms apply when you use the Mashcut iPhone app or this website. By creating an account or using Mashcut, you agree to them; if you don't agree, please don't use Mashcut. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information.
The short version
- Mashcut turns clips you film (a hook for each ad, a demo of your product and, if you like, a call to action), or one take of you talking, into short vertical ads. It edits only your own footage and words, and before you export an ad you can correct its captions and on-screen text and, within limits, its cut: use another take of a part, or trim, split or remove a clip.
- Making, editing, previewing and exporting ads needs an active subscription, bought through Apple's App Store. Apple handles billing, cancellation and refunds.
- Each plan includes a set number of credits a month, and you can buy packs of extra credits that don't reset. Making an ad uses 1 credit, and if Mashcut can't make an ad, its credit comes back automatically. Editing, exporting and exporting again don't use credits.
- Save each ad you want to keep when you export it: without a subscription, the app can't download it again.
- Your footage stays yours. You're responsible for having the rights to what you upload, for the text you type, and for the ads you publish.
- Mashcut makes no promise about any ad's performance, and it doesn't check ads against any platform's rules.
- You can delete your account in the app at any time.
What Mashcut does
Mashcut is an iPhone app for making short vertical video ads. In Mix & Match, you choose how many ads to make, from 1 to 10, and film or import their clips: a hook for each ad (its opening line), a demo showing your product while you explain it, and, if you like, a call to action to close. Mashcut uploads the clips to its servers, transcribes what you said, keeps one take of any line you repeat within a clip, removes hesitation sounds such as "um" and trims pauses, and cuts the ads so each opens with a different hook, followed by parts of your demo and your call to action. If you film your demo more than once, any of those takes may be used, so leave out any you don't want.
Or one take of you talking. In Auto Edit, you film one take of yourself talking, or import one. Mashcut makes from 1 to 10 ready-to-test ads from it: it keeps one take of any line you repeat, removes hesitation sounds and pauses, leaves out asides that aren't part of your message (such as "is it recording?"), and, if the take still runs longer than an ad allows, leaves out parts of what you said so it fits, keeping the rest in the order you said it. Every ad plays the same cut, with captions made from your words unless you turn them off, and, if you choose text hooks, opens with its own on-screen hook when your take has one: a line you said, which can come from anywhere in the take, its opening included, quoted word for word, or a short line Mashcut writes from it. Ads from one take may share lines, footage or message. If your take gives fewer usable hooks than the ads you asked for, Mashcut makes fewer ads rather than two with the same hook; without text hooks it makes one ad. A take with no speech, or too few words to make an ad, stops the set.
Finished ads are 9:16 MP4 videos up to 35 seconds long, so a long demo is cut down. In Auto Edit, when Mashcut offers it, you can choose another ad length before Make: Short (up to 20 seconds), Long (up to 60 seconds) or No Limit (up to 90 seconds). Each is a limit, not a target. Mashcut crops and zooms your footage, cleans up and evens out its sound, burns in captions made from your words, and shows a few words from your hook, when it has any, as a title.
Mashcut edits; it never puts words in your mouth. It uses AI to choose which of your takes and words to keep, and in Auto Edit which of your lines each hook comes from, but it adds no speech, voices, music or stock footage. Captions, and the on-screen text it quotes, come from the transcript of your clips' sound, so other voices or song lyrics it picks up can appear too. In Auto Edit, a hook can instead be a short line Mashcut writes from one of your lines and checks by rules: its numbers, prices, percentages and durations must be ones you said in that line; its words must be that line's or a few plain framing words like "why" or "this", with at most one other word you said in the part of your take the ad plays; and words like "best", "cure", "buy" or "your" may appear only if that line uses them. The rules read words, not meaning, so the editor marks the hook as written by Mashcut, and you can change every word of it or hide it before you export. If your takes are shorter than an ad's usual length, Mashcut makes a shorter ad rather than padding it. If automatic planning fails, Mashcut delivers a simpler automatic cut instead.
Mashcut works from your words. A call-to-action clip needs speech: one with none, or only fillers like "um" and "uh", stops the whole set of ads from being made. A hook may be silent, such as a reaction or a reveal: it is used as footage from its first frame, with no captions over it. An ad that opens on a silent hook still needs your voice later in it, in a demo or a call to action, and a hook too dark to see stops the set. You'll find out after the upload, once Mashcut reaches that clip; the app doesn't yet say which clip it was. Mashcut cuts between words, so in a demo clip where you talk, silent stretches are left out; a demo clip with no speech at all is used as footage, in short pieces that carry no captions or on-screen text.
You can correct the words and the cut. In the editor, you can change the text of any caption, rewrite or remove the on-screen title, and put either back the way Mashcut made it. The ad then shows exactly what you typed, at the same moment as the words it replaces. On an Auto Edit ad you can also move its hook between the top and the middle of the frame, and show it for the ad's opening or the whole ad; that changes only where and when the text appears, never what's said in the video. Correcting a caption doesn't change what's said in the video. You can also remove captions from your edited video. Removing a caption does not remove or alter the underlying spoken audio, and removed captions may not be recoverable after you save your changes. You can also correct the cut, within limits: where Mashcut kept another take of a part, you can use it instead; you can move where a clip starts or ends, to any point within that take, even the middle of a word; you can split a clip in two; and you can remove a clip, as long as its part keeps at least one, except that removing an Auto Edit ad's opening clip makes the next clip its opening, and the ad always keeps at least one. You can't add footage, reorder the clips, or make an ad longer than Mashcut allows, and a change to the cut can remove or reset the captions and on-screen text in the clips it changes.
Your account
- You can create an account with Sign in with Apple or with an email address and password.
- Keep your sign-in details secure. If you think someone else has used your account, email support@usemashcut.com.
- If you forget your password, tap Forgot password? on the sign-in screen and we'll email you a link to choose a new one. Accounts made with Sign in with Apple don't have a Mashcut password.
Subscriptions and billing
- You need an active subscription to make, edit, preview and export ads, to download an ad again, to buy extra credits, and to open your library. Without one, you can still sign in, restore a purchase, see your plan and credits, and delete your account.
- Mashcut currently offers two plans, Creator and Pro, each billed monthly or yearly. The app shows each plan's price and billing period before you buy; prices come from the App Store.
- Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. To cancel, open your iPhone's Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. The app can't cancel for you, and deleting your Mashcut account doesn't cancel your subscription.
- You can change plans in the app. The App Store decides when a change takes effect.
- If Apple can't collect a renewal payment, you may keep access for a while as Apple retries, but you can't buy extra credits, and no new monthly credits are added until the payment goes through.
- Apple processes every payment, so refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's policies. You can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com (opens in a new tab).
Credits
- Your plan includes a set number of credits for each month of your subscription, on monthly and yearly plans alike; a yearly plan's months run from the day it started. The app shows how many you have left and when they reset.
- Mashcut adds each month's credits once it has confirmed your subscription is active. If it can't confirm that for a while, making ads may be unavailable until it can.
- Making an ad uses 1 credit. When you tap Make, Mashcut uses one credit for each ad you asked for, so you need that many credits, from your plan or your extra credits. If you don't have enough, nothing is made and no credits are used, and the app tells you how many you have. It's the same for Mix & Match and Auto Edit ads, and captions, text hooks and a set's other options don't use extra credits.
- If Mashcut can't make an ad, its credit comes back automatically. That includes an ad that fails, a set that stops (for example, because a take has no speech), the ads Auto Edit doesn't make when your take has fewer hook lines than the ads you asked for, a set whose clips never finish uploading, and the ads not made yet when you stop and delete a set. An ad that was made keeps its credit. For a set whose clips never finish uploading, the credits come back about a day after its upload links stop working.
- A plan credit that comes back returns to the month it was used from: if that month has already ended, it expires with that month's other credits. An extra credit that comes back is yours to use again (see Extra credits).
- Try again on an ad that was never made, on a set made after Mashcut began using credits at Make, makes it again and uses 1 credit, which comes back if it fails again. Try again on an ad of an older set doesn't use credits. Try again on an ad whose update didn't finish, and every edit you make, don't use credits.
- Exporting doesn't use credits. You can export an ad, and export it again after editing it, as often as you like while you're subscribed. That includes ads made before Mashcut used credits when making them.
- Your plan's credits are used first. Extra credits are used only once your plan's credits for the month run out.
- Save or share each ad you want to keep when you export it, for example to Photos. Without a subscription, the app can't download or share an ad again.
- Your plan's unused credits don't carry over: each month's expire when that month ends. If you move up to a bigger plan, the credits you hadn't used stay until they would have reset, alongside the new plan's.
- Your plan's credits belong to the App Store subscription that pays for them. If you restore that subscription on another Mashcut account, its unused plan credits move with it. When you delete your account, its unused credits are gone: restoring the same subscription on a new account doesn't bring them back, and the next month's arrive as usual.
- Credits can't be exchanged for money.
Extra credits
- While your subscription is active, you can buy extra credits in packs of 10, 50 or 100, each a one-time purchase through Apple's App Store. The app shows each pack's price, which comes from the App Store.
- Extra credits don't reset or expire, but they can be used only while your subscription gives you access to Mashcut.
- They stay with the Mashcut account that bought them. They don't move if you restore your subscription on another account, and restoring purchases doesn't add them again.
- If Mashcut can't confirm your recent purchases for a while, extra credits may be unavailable until it can. Your plan's credits can still be used.
- If Apple refunds a pack, Mashcut takes back up to that pack's number of credits from the extra credits you have left, even if some came from another pack. It never takes back more than you have, and never touches your plan's credits. If it couldn't take back the whole pack, an extra credit used before the refund for an ad Mashcut then can't make goes toward the rest, instead of coming back.
- Extra credits can't be exchanged for money. They're lost when you delete your account, and so is any pack that hasn't reached your balance by then.
Your content
Your footage stays yours. Mashcut doesn't claim ownership of the clips you upload.
To make your ads, Mashcut stores your clips, converts them, has them transcribed, and renders finished ads from them, sharing what each step needs with the companies named in our Privacy Policy. It doesn't use your footage, audio, transcripts or the text you type to train AI models.
Finished ads are made only from your footage and words, the text you type in the editor, Mashcut's own ad format and styling, openly licensed fonts and, in Auto Edit, a short hook Mashcut may write from a line you said. Mashcut adds no music, voices or stock footage.
Your responsibilities
- Only upload footage you have the right to use. If other people appear or can be heard in your clips, make sure they've agreed to appear in an ad. The same goes for music, logos, artwork, products and anything else in the shot. Mashcut keeps your clips' own sound, including any music playing in the background.
- Review every ad before you use it. Captions come from automatic speech recognition and can contain mistakes. You can correct them in the editor, but Mashcut doesn't check whether a cut, or anything you type, changes the meaning of what you said.
- You're responsible for the ads you publish, including what they say about your product, the text you type into them, the rules of the platforms you post on, and the advertising rules that apply to you, such as labelling paid promotions. Mashcut doesn't add a paid-promotion label for you.
- Mashcut doesn't promise results. It makes no promise about an ad's views, sales or conversions, and it doesn't check ads against any advertising platform's rules.
Acceptable use
Don't use Mashcut to:
- break the law, or infringe anyone's rights, including copyright, trademark, privacy and publicity rights;
- make ads that deceive people, or that harass or harm anyone;
- get around its limits, security checks or payments;
- overload or disrupt the service, or reach other people's accounts or content.
Mashcut also has usage limits. Today they are: clips of 1 second to 3 minutes, or up to 10 minutes for an Auto Edit take, and up to 1 GB each once the app has prepared them for upload; in each set, up to 5 hooks, 10 demo clips and 5 call-to-action clips, with up to 10 minutes of footage in total; 1 to 10 ads per set, with a hook for each Mix & Match ad; and up to 20 new sets and 120 previews an hour, where opening the editor counts as a preview.
Changes to Mashcut
Mashcut is new and changing quickly. We may add, change or remove features, ad formats and providers, change the limits above, pause new ads for a while (for example, during maintenance), or require you to update the app to keep using it.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time in the app's settings, with or without a subscription. This permanently deletes your account, the clips, ads and edits stored on our servers, and your account's subscription and credit history, and it can't be undone. Any credits you haven't used are lost, including extra credits you bought. Ads you saved or shared outside Mashcut stay where you put them, but the app can't open its own copies again once your account is gone. Deleting your account doesn't cancel an App Store subscription, so cancel that first in your iPhone's Settings.
While you're subscribed, you can also move a set of ads to Trash, from Work or from the set itself, and restore it or delete it for good from there; a set still being made can be stopped and deleted. Our Privacy Policy explains how long Trash keeps a set, what deletion removes and the few records that remain.
Apple and other services
App Store purchases and Sign in with Apple are also covered by Apple's own terms. Mashcut relies on the companies listed in our Privacy Policy to run.
