How to remove ums and pauses from video

Last updated November 5, 2026 · By the Mashcut team

Ums, false starts and long pauses make a talking video feel slow, and in an ad they cost viewers. Cutting them is simple in principle and tedious in practice: every filler word is a separate cut. Here's how to do it by hand, how to do it faster, and how to keep the joins from showing.

The short version

  • The cleanest cut lands in the gap between words, never in the middle of one.
  • By hand, you find each filler on the timeline, cut either side of it and close the gap.
  • Editors that work from a transcript let you delete the word as text, which deletes the video under it.
  • A short sound fade across each cut hides the join; a cut with no fade can click.
  • Mashcut does it automatically: it keeps one take of each repeated line and cuts the ums and pauses between words.

01Why remove ums and pauses at all?

Because the start of a video is where viewers decide to stay. TikTok's split testing guide (opens in a new tab) treats the opening 2–3 seconds as the hook. A pause or an "um" in that window spends it on nothing. Later in the video, dead air reads as hesitation, which is the opposite of what a recommendation should sound like.

Not every pause should go. A beat before the punchline or after a reveal is doing work. Cut the fillers and the stalls, and keep the pauses you meant.

02How do you remove ums by hand in a timeline editor?

  1. Turn on the waveform. Fillers and pauses show up as small bumps and flat stretches between words.
  2. Cut on each side of the filler. Place the cut in the silence just before it and just after it, not on the word itself.
  3. Delete the piece and close the gap. Most editors call this a ripple delete.
  4. Add a short sound fade across the cut. It smooths the join so it doesn't click.
  5. Watch it back at full speed. A cut that looks fine frame by frame can still sound rushed.

It works, and it's slow: a minute of talking can hide a lot of cuts, and every new take starts over.

03Is there a faster way than cutting on the timeline?

Yes: edit the transcript instead. Text-based editors transcribe your speech and line each word up with the video, so deleting an "um" from the text deletes it from the video. You still decide every cut, but you read instead of scrubbing.

In Mashcut's web editor you can select captions and remove them; the speech and the video under them go together, and you can undo it.

04How do you remove ums and pauses automatically?

Let the editor make the cuts. Mashcut reads your takes, keeps one take of each line you repeated, and cuts the ums and pauses for you. Every cut lands between words, and the sound fades across each cut so the join disappears.

It's built for UGC ads: you give it hooks and a demo, and it makes up to 5 cleaned-up ads, one per hook, with captions from your words. You can still change any caption or use another take of a part afterwards.

05How do you keep the cuts from showing?

  • Cut in silence, never mid-word. A clipped consonant is the most obvious tell.
  • Fade the sound across the cut. A very short fade hides the change in room noise.
  • Keep your energy level. A cut between a calm sentence and an excited one sounds like a cut.
  • Don't fear the jump cut. In UGC, a small jump in the frame reads as pace, not a mistake.
  • Leave the intentional pauses. Cut stalls, not timing.

06Frequently asked questions

What are filler words?

Sounds and words that fill a pause without adding meaning: "um", "uh", "like", "you know". In a script read, false starts and repeated lines count too.

Should I remove every pause?

No. Remove the stalls and keep the pauses you meant, such as the beat before a punchline.

Does Mashcut remove ums automatically?

Yes. It cuts the ums and pauses between words and keeps one take of each line you repeated, on its servers.
